Catacomb and Catacomb II are top-down Gauntlet-style shooters. They are two of id Software's earliest games. They are the direct ancestors of most First Person Shooters. They introduced strafing.

Catacomb was distributed on the same Gamer's Edge disk as Dangerous Dave.

They are part of series of 6 games, in two trilogies:

It evolved like this: Catacomb + Hovertank -> Catacomb 3-D -> Wolfenstein 3-D -> Doom -> Quake
