Hazards

Hi - that "Hazards" section that you added to Template:EpisodeInfo - what's it for? -- Malvineous 00:40, 3 February 2007 (GMT)

To list everything that hurts Keen in the game, but is not an enemy. For example, in Keen 2, some hazards are the electric bulbs, the flares, the plasma, etc. In the Keencyclopedia you can see a list of hazards per episode. I think it would be useful to put them here, specially for completness sake. Sega381 04:21, 3 February 2007 (GMT)

Why don't you just add the Pat-Pat to both categories? Both links go to the same article. -Stealthy71088 5:00, 14 February 2007 (GMT)

Good idea, I'll do that :) .Sega381 18:12, 15 February 2007 (GMT)

Signing

Hi Sega381 - I was just looking through some past edits - you do realise that you can use four tildes (~~~~) to automatically "sign" these talk messages, so that you don't have to manually calculate the time? (when you preview/save they get replaced with the current time.) -- Malvineous 10:58, 1 July 2007 (GMT)

Hi there... yep, I know that, and I usually use them too... I didn't do that somewhere? Thanks anyway, but I'm not sure why you think I don't use them... maybe I have the wrong time zone configured? Btw, it's not easy in my keyboard to produce the tilde symbol... it would be great if there was a shortcut to make them appear, as Wikipedia has, though I'm not sure how they add those shortcuts at the end of an edit window... Sega381 02:03, 5 July 2007 (GMT)
Hmm, in fact, though I have "my preferences" configured at my time zone (-4), it still shows the server time when I use the four tildes... Sega381 02:06, 5 July 2007 (GMT)

Xterra1

Did you like my walkthrough,Sega381?--Xterra1 17:35, 7 July 2007 (GMT)

I guess you mean the Bloog Control Center one? Yes, it was very good and useful. Btw, thanks for putting me in the credits, but I'll better remove the mentions to you and me: the idea is that the articles themselves are important for what they are, not for who wrote them. If someone wants to know who wrote something, they can check it in the history. Other than that, good work! Sega381 16:40, 8 July 2007 (GMT)
I get your point.--Xterra1 20:31, 8 July 2007 (GMT)

I didn't know you were Chilean!--Xterra1 00:13, 10 July 2007 (GMT)(PS-I'm American)

Yep, I am :) Sega381 03:35, 10 July 2007 (GMT)
Cool.--Xterra1 16:57, 10 July 2007 (GMT)
So I am. The world is small, isn't it? --Shadow Master 17:13, 10 July 2007 (GMT)
I knew you were Chilean,SM. --Xterra1 17:17, 10 July 2007 (GMT)

Sega-look at the Keen 4 bugs talk page-I found that.--Xterra1 19:07, 11 July 2007 (GMT)

Wikipedia

Sega-I was blocked by Ryulong on Wikipedia for "vandalism"-I AM NOT A VANDAL!!!! Please go on Wikipedia and look him up,and ask him to unblock me-I'm a newbie there, but the rules differ-I didn't Know!!(sob)--Xterra1 05:36, 20 July 2007 (GMT):`-(Please do it for a friend- me.)[crying]

I'll check it out, but I don't see any "block" warnings on your user page there...Sega381 14:14, 20 July 2007 (GMT)
Forget it-I've been unblocked.--Xterra1 17:44, 20 July 2007 (GMT)

Admin

Hi Sega - you've made quite a few worthwhile contributions to the wiki, are you interested in becoming an admin? The job doesn't really involve much, but it does give you a bit more power to help keep things in order. Let me know if you're interested. -- Malvineous 13:54, 26 September 2007 (GMT)

Sure, I'd be happy to become an admin! Just tell me if I need to do something previously to that, or if I need to activate it in some way. Thank you for the invitation! Sega381 23:50, 26 September 2007 (GMT)
You're welcome! I've granted you 'sysop' access now - you shouldn't have to do anything, except maybe log off and back on again. You should notice more tabs across the top of each page, and you'll have access to some of the restricted special pages, e.g. to ban users. Feel free to ask me or the other admins if you have any questions, but I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out. Enjoy! --
Malvineous 12:29, 27 September 2007 (GMT)
Ye be welcome. Any questions, ask us. Also, if you have interest in the technical part of being sysop, you can always look at the Handbook for admins at MediaWiki's website. Regards.--Shadow Master 15:20, 27 September 2007 (GMT)
Thanks, I'll check it out! Sega381 03:47, 28 September 2007 (GMT)
OMG-Congratulations! We have a new sysop! (applause) Sega,you're cool.-Xterra1(talk)(work)(?) 20:45, 28 September 2007 (GMT)
Hehe, thanks! Sega381 23:43, 1 October 2007 (GMT)

Background music

Hi Sega - funny you added the song to the level infobox, I was thinking about starting a section for Keen music (especially so we could list all the fan remixes.) Do you think we should have a page per song (as your template is set up with now) or do you think the song name in each template should link back to a single article, e.g. [[Keen 4 Music]]? I suppose then we could have a page for Keen Music, which links to Keen [456] Music and a page for remixes and other Keen-related songs. What do you think? -- Malvineous 07:34, 15 March 2008 (GMT)

Oh and I guess you should've looked up the names of the songs too, the "Slug Village Theme" is actually called "Welcome to a Kick in the Pants in Good Old Hillville" :-P Probably not worth correcting though until we work out how this will all work. -- Malvineous 07:56, 15 March 2008 (GMT)
Yes, I was thinking along the lines of having a [[Keen 4 Music]], but as I wasn't sure, I just put the link to the song name. I almost added that to the Episode template, but I dind't have the time. Maybe there could be pages named after the songs, but all of them redirecting to the Keen X Music article. I don't think there is enough info on each song to have a complete article for each one of them.
About the wrong song names, I'm aware of that other song, but I'm pretty sure that according to Bobby Prince's original site, the song played in Hillville is not the Hillvile song, but the Slug Village Theme (which is an unnoficial name, as this song has no official name in Bobby Prince's old page). I have always thought that odd. However, maybe I'm wrong, or maybe Prince used the wrong song name for that MIDI file. I'll check it out more carefully anyway.Sega381 21:04, 15 March 2008 (GMT)
I'm somewhat against having an article page for every single song name (even if they do redirect back to a single per-episode page), as I don't think the pages would be linked to very often. If I get a chance I'll start on the overall music pages, while we decide what to do for each level template. -- Malvineous 01:03, 16 March 2008 (GMT)
No problem, we'll just have to add the correct page to the Song links in each level. I find "Keen N Music" ok, so if you agree, I'll start adding that to the level links.Sega381
That sounds fine, but it might be best to alter the level template and put the link in there instead, so that you don't have to manually override the link in each level - sort of like what I did with the template used in Keen Remixes where the song names link back to that game. Unfortunately this means we'll need to redo the Game parameter so that it's no longer a link itself, which could be a bit of work... -- Malvineous 05:52, 16 March 2008 (GMT)
Ok, about the songnames. In this link to the 3D Realms site, you cant get a zip file with several MIDI songs of Keen, released by Bobby Prince (which used to be in his site). According to Booby Prince himself, there is a very lively and happy song in there called "Welcome to a Kick in the Pants in Good Old Hillville" (which is there acalled "Welcome to a GOOD OLD Kick in the Pants in Hillville.mid", but I think the "good old" part moving is just a mistake). If you play Keen 4, you can listen to that son in Border Village and Crystalus. There are several other songs in the pack, but there's one song missing that is played in Slug Village, The Perilous Pit, the Bean-with-Bacon, AND in Hillville. So, according to Bobby Prince, the song heard in Hillville is NOT the song with "Hillville" in it's name. As the first level where that song is heard (besides the Beans-with-Bacon) is Slug Village, I called it "Slug Village Theme", but that name can change.Sega381 03:03, 16 March 2008 (GMT)
I think you're right there - I'm pretty sure the Slug Village theme is called "oasis.imf" - perhaps after Lifewater Oasis. One of the remixes is based on it I think. I would rather call the song something with Oasis in the title instead of "The Slug Village theme" given the filename, but it's a shame we don't have the real name. -- Malvineous 05:52, 16 March 2008 (GMT)
Sure, no problem. Funny thing is, that song is NOT player in Lifewater Oasis; Eat Your Veggies is played there. But as there is also a mix with the Hillville song, I guess we shouldn't worry about it. One question: how do you know the file name? I've never modded or extracted anything from the keen files, so is there an easy way to unpack the songs?Sega381 18:18, 16 March 2008 (GMT)
And if there is, is there any reference to the song name? The little I've seen about the AudioT format leads me to believe that the song names are not mentioned there, nor the filenames... and I've found few references to "oasis.imf". Where did you get that from? Thanks!Sega381 00:49, 17 March 2008 (GMT)
Yes, it's odd the song isn't played in Lifewater Oasis either - I guess they didn't pay much attention to the names when assigning them to levels. You're correct in that the song names aren't stored in the AudioT files, and there is an easy way to extract all the files but I forget what it is now - I think it was one of Andy Durdin's utilities, it just extracts them as Track01.imf, Track02.imf, etc. (Or maybe it was the GETIMF utility that comes with IMF2MIDI? Can't remember.) The song names I have apparently were supplied by John Romero, and interestingly enough some of the songs are slightly different to those used in the games (you could call them "extended versions.") Unfortunately only a few songs each from Keen 4, 5 and 6 are included though. I should probably put them up on the Keen Music page. -- Malvineous 12:11, 17 March 2008 (GMT)
May I ask where you got those IMFs from? It would be useful to have the reference, and I'd like to check them out too.Sega381 17:47, 17 March 2008 (GMT)
I downloaded them from an Adlib music website, I think before we figured out how to extract the music from the game itself. The URL in the readme no longer exists (dfg.theunderdogs.org), but I have a feeling it came through "Death Adder" (http://adlib.superfighter.com/) but I could be wrong - it's been a while. -- Malvineous 21:57, 17 March 2008 (GMT)
I think I found it inside a bigger archive with AdPlay included, at this link. Is it the same pack? There is no readme for the specific Keen files though...Sega381 22:30, 17 March 2008 (GMT)
Hmm, that's interesting, that archive has a couple of files mine doesn't. I've uploaded all my Keen music which includes the readme if you're interested. I'll have to download that file you linked to and see which songs the extra files are! The particular archive I found was just the Keen IMFs. IIRC there were downloads for other Apogee IMFs too. -- Malvineous 08:46, 18 March 2008 (GMT)
Ok, so I'll start using the official names for the songs that have them (Bobby Prince's page being the official name's source), and names based on that IMF archive filenames for the rest. Those that can't be found in either place could have a name based on the level they appear in.Sega381 17:44, 18 March 2008 (GMT)
Sorry about taking so long with this - I've uploaded http://www.shikadi.net/wiki/files/keenmusic-r1.zip. Let me know if you're happy with the arrangement of the files. (If you are, feel free to start adding links to it.) -- Malvineous 01:30, 13 April 2008 (GMT)
Yes, it seems perfect. The only thing that could be changed is the Jazz Me MIDI song, which could go to a subfolder called "unused", as the IMF ones. However, it's only one song, so I'm not sure it's really necessary. I'll start checking how to add the links to the templates. Sega381 02:08, 15 April 2008 (GMT)
Done - uploaded as http://www.shikadi.net/wiki/files/keenmusic-r2.zip. I might change the template links (hopefully you don't mind) so that instead of a download link for each song, there's only one overall - just to make it clearer that there's only a single download. -- Malvineous 03:12, 19 April 2008 (GMT)
Hey, thanks for updating all the tags on the song pages too (Keen 4 -> 4, Track 01 -> 01, etc.) I was really hoping I wouldn't have to do that myself :-) -- Malvineous 03:31, 19 April 2008 (GMT)
No problem. By the way, if you want to improve the "Versions" part of the template, be my guest.--Sega381 14:13, 19 April 2008 (GMT)
