This page lists the known versions of Keen 4 and any differences discovered between the versions.

Version 1.0 demo

  • EGA version
  • Limited number of levels available
  • Keen 4 seems to have been originally planned to be a commercial game and not shareware in this demo
  • When an unavailable level is selected from world-map, an explanatory screen appears, the same screen which text was left in the EGA Graphics file (EGAGRAPH.CK4) of later versions.
  • Sound that comes from collecting Lifewater flash is the same as collecting normal score
  • Different music on world map
  • No music in levels (Incomplete OASIS.IMF can be found from the files)
  • Less score in the underworld part in level 1
  • There are no sleeping worms in the second village level
  • No ordering info in help screen
  • Has a lot more files than the actual release (The files have not yet been merged into the exe)
  • The paddle war minigame doesn't have a speed limit (Game is unplayable on faster computers)
  • No E+N+D cheat
  • Doesn't require you to use A+2+Enter to use debug cheats
  • EGA and VGA video modes listed separawtely at initializing screen
  • No B+A+T cheat
  • Game version number is written in a different place at the initializing screen
  • The F10+P cheat triggers 1-UP sound and freezes game
  • Quiet Adlib music mode added
  • Firing button can not be changed
  • Joystick options can be altered even if a joystick has not been detected
  • No F10+Y debugging cheat
  • Some differences in the ComputerWrist section at help screen

  • Added "Fix Jerky Motion" option to make movement smoother on certain computers (EGA only)
  • Better soundcard detection
  • Added Gravis Gamepad support
  • Fixed last page in computer wrist help section which erroneously said The Armageddon Machine
  • Copyright date on the initializing screen now 1992

Version 1.4 (Goodtimes)

  • EGA version only
  • Added Gravis Gamepad support
  • Order info section removed
  • A line about Goodtimes software has been added to the bottom of the initializing screen
  • Title screen has distributed by Apogee removed
  • ID software section updated
